How to prepare your child for a successful sports session?
Sports Session.
Let's talk about making sports sessions with your child not just okay, but good.
And by ‘Good Session’, I mean – If the child progresses from A to B in the session we can call it a good session.
Here is your Guidelines for a Good Sports Session with your child:
Pre-session Preparation:
Inform the child about the upcoming sports session and activities.
Lack of preparation may lead to meltdowns at the start of the session.
Syncing with the Coach:
Once the child is comfortable with the coach, less preparation is required.
Handling Meltdowns:
If a session starts with a meltdown, parents should initially step back and let the coach handle the situation.
Often, the child begins responding positively after a few minutes.
Parental Participation During Session:
I recommend to Limit parents' participation during the session, as children might be less focused when parents are around.
Balance in Session Content:
A good session should consist of 50% theory and practical knowledge and 50% positive energy, vibes, and intentions for teaching and progress.
Addressing Child's Misbehaviour:
Correcting a child for minor misbehaviour during the session might hinder progress.
Understanding Child Behavior during the session:
Recognize that a child's behaviour is normal for the coach, and he/she knows how to handle it.
Look our for Red Flags:
If a coach/professional working with the child complains about their behaviour, it could be a red flag, indicating a lack of understanding in working with the child.
Handling Fear of Falling:
Many children fear falling, and acknowledging that it's okay and encouraging them to try again can lead to significant progress.
Positive Reinforcement After Falls:
When a child falls during activities like cycling or skating, repeatedly reassuring them that it's okay can lead to improved behaviour and willingness to try again.
